Aspen Music Festival Commission

The Aspen Music Festival commissioned a 20 minute piano quintet.  The commission is spread out over two summer seasons.  During August 2007 the first two movements were premiered in the music tent.  The entire quintet will be premiered on August 11, 2008.

 

Green Bay Symphony Orchestra Composer in Residence

Daniel Kellogg will serve as composer-in-residence for the Green Bay Symphony Orchestra during the 2007-08 season.  This residency will include performances of Dr. Kellogg's music, a composition project involving members of the Green Bay Symphony Youth Orchestra, and the premiere of new 7 minute work for chorus and orchestra.  The residency is supported by a grant from Meet the Composer and the League of American Orchestras.

National Symphony Premieres Pyramus and Thisbe

The National Symphony Orchestra with Leonard Slatkin and actor Joh Lithgow premiered Pyramus and Thisbe on March 4 on two family concerts.  This piece tells the story of Pyramus and Thisbe from Act V of Shakespeare's Midsummer Nights Dream.  Tony Award winning writer Mark O'Donnell arranged the text for one actor.  The premiere was a great success.  Read the review here.

 

National Symphony Orchestra Commission

Leonard Slatkin and the National Symphony Orchestra has commissioned a 20 minute piece for narrator and orchestra.  The piece will be premiered on 2 family concerts March 4, 2007 as part of a city-wide Shakespeare celebration.  TonyŽ-award winning librettist Mark O'Donnell has written a one actor version of the play-within-a-play Pyramus and Thisbe from Act V of Midsummer Nights Dream.  The ham of an actor will play Narrator, Pyramus, Thisbe, Wall, Moon, and of course Lion.

Colorado Symphony Orchestra Opens 2006-2007 Season with Daniel Kellogg Premiere

The Colorado Symphony Orchestra commissioned a 12 minute piece to begin their 2006-2007 season.  The piece, titled Refracted Skies, commemorates the opening of the Frederic C. Hamilton Building at the Denver Art Museum.  This spectacular new building was designed by architect Daniel Libeskind and its opening is being celebrated through Denver.

Refracted Skies premieres September 15, 16, & 17, 2006 with Jeffrey Kahane and the Colorado Symphony Orchestra at Boettcher Concert Hall.

Daniel Kellogg Receives a Barlow Endowment Commission

The Barlow Endowment has awarded Daniel Kellogg a 2006 Barlow Commission grant to write a piece for Yoshiyuki Ishikawa and the University of Colorado Faculty Quartet.  The piece will be premiered during the 2007-2008 concert season.

 

South Dakota Symphony Appoints Daniel Kellogg Composer-in-Residence

Conductor Delta David Gier and the South Dakota Symphony announces that Daniel Kellogg will serve as Composer-in-Residence for 3 years starting in the 2006-2007 season.  The residency will include performances of Kellogg's music each season and will culminate in a newly created work for the third year of the residency.

The South Dakota Symphony has recently begun a serious commitment to contemporary orchestra music.  Delta David Gier's vision to bring important new orchestral music into the mainstream concert hall was inaugurated with a series of Pulitzer Prize winning compositions.  Go to the New Music Box to read a great article written by David.

 

Meet the Composer Awards Daniel Kellogg a Music Alive Residency

Round VII of the Meet the Composer Music Alive Residency will include a three year residency with the Green Bay Symphony and composers Jennifer Higdon, Daniel Kellogg, and Philip Rothman.  Each composer will be in residence for one year.  These residencies will include 4 weeks of activities spread throughout the year and the creation of a new work for the orchestra.  Daniel Kellogg will be in residence for the 2007-2008 season.

 

Aspen Music Festival offers US Premiere of Praegustatum

The Aspen Chamber Orchestra under the direction of John Nelson gave the US premiere of Praegustatum on August 4, 2006.  Praegustatum was commissioned by John Nelson and his orchestra Ensemble orchestral de Paris to commemorate the 2006 Mozart Anniversary.  The piece is for 16 part string ensemble and is a fantasy on the Mozart choral piece, Ave Verum Corpus.

Praegustatum was premiered by Ensemble orchestral de Paris and John Nelson in Paris on January 10, 2006.

 

Daniel Kellogg wins ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award

ASCAP awarded Daniel Kellogg his 6th ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award for the piano piece scarlet thread.  Each year ASCAP honors around 20 young composers (under the age of 30) with this award from a pool of applicants averaging above 400.  He received the award at the annual ASCAP Concert Music Awards at Lincoln Center, NY in May 2006. 

scarlet thread was premiered by pianist Hsing-ay Hsu at the Guggenheim Museum, NY in October 2004.  The same piece was included in the 2005 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition as part of the American Composers Invitational.  Go to the New Music Box for an article about the composers at the competition.

 

Philadelphia Orchestra Premieres Daniel Kellogg Piece

In November 2005 the Philadelphia Orchestra premiered Ben by Daniel Kellogg.  Ben was commissioned to commemorate the 300th Anniversary of Benjamin Franklin.  The 25 minute piece touches on aspects of Franklin's life through the use of Scottish melodies he loved, the glass armonica which he invented, and drinking songs he sang.  The Philadelphia Orchestra performed the piece seven times during the 2005-2006 season. This commission was the result of a national competition.  Daniel Kellogg was chosen from 110 applicants and after two rounds of judging, the final decision was made by Christoph Eschenbach.

Ben will be performed during the 2006-2007 season by the South Dakota Symphony on October 7, 2006.
